Coming up with ideas that you and an older person can enjoy together can be difficult. Creative activities are necessary to keep the brain active and healthy. Mental health is just as important as physical health, which is why we’ve compiled this list of our favorite tried and tested creative activities to do with your elderly loved one.

Have a home spa day

Creative activities don’t always have to be physically or mentally exhausting, and sometimes it’s good to relax. Together you and your loved ones can enjoy a short spa day in the comfort of your own home. This could include face masks, giving each other manicures and pedicures with relaxing music in the background, or having a local beauty therapist attend to give you both a pampering massage.

Who doesn’t like visiting day spas?

Writing or Reading

If the elderly individual in your life enjoys reading magazines or books, it could be a good idea to provide new books when they ask to keep their brain active and thinking. You could also take it to the next level and offer to discuss books in an outside book club setting when COVID-19 imitations are lifted or over a video call.

Gardening

Gardening is a great way to encourage your elderly loved one to spend time outdoors while expressing their creativity. If your loved one doesn’t have the energy to complete the advanced gardening activities, there are still small things they can do to help contribute to the process. The planning aspect of gardening is an activity they can certainly get stuck into!

Afternoon tea

Afternoon tea is a lovely little activity to do with your loved one. Allowing them to control the situation will encourage their creativity and allow you both to bond over some tea, scones, and sandwiches!
You can even suggest a theme to pique their interest.

Dancing

Many older adults can easily recall their favorite dance steps, and while perhaps not as light on their feet as their younger selves, a slow waltz is a great way to get up and moving.

Singing

Similar to dancing, we all remember popular songs from our childhood. Music has a magical ability to transport us back to certain times and places, proving a wonderful memory tool and a dose of nostalgia. Why not plan a group singing along to your favorite hits?
